Sounds of the Past
(the voices that made me who i am)

Wally Heaps & "Peanuts"

This is a recording of my father's father, telling a story about how he rode an unbroken horse when he was only 9 years old. The children in the back ground are my 3 older brothers and my older sister. The youngest is one year old during this, and I am 5 years younger then him. So this was taped about 4 years before I was born; actually, it was four years, one month and two days before I was born, but who's counting? (Cut from a larger audio segment, kids voices brought up to audible levels).

Marie Heaps in the Circus

This is a recording of my father's mother, telling a story of the time she was in the circus. She was about 11 years old, during the Great Depression, and it gave her a start for her later tumbling. ('Pops' and 'clicks' from the microphone and assorted extra noise cut out, and over all volume normalized).

Kids Will Be Kids

My mother and her mother used to trade letters on tape, allowing them to talk about how they felt when they couldn't do it on the phone or in person. My brothers and sister were fairly young at the time and got a hold of the tape recorder. They knew the tape was used as a letter to their grandparents, and my sister Roxanne can be heard saying "I love you Ralph", referring to our step-grandfather. This is all of their interruptions; spliced together. (Aside from splices, audio has been left as originally recorded).

Rosalind's Testing Cry

My Mom's war cry as she tests the recorder.
